Online cheating: Man duped of Rs 4 lakh

Bangalore, Nov 6,Deccan Herald News Service :

A person has been duped of more than Rs 4 lakh in an online sweepstake case.

Akshay (name changed), a resident of Dobbespet in Nelamangala taluk, has lodged a complaint of cheating with the Malleswaram police saying Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Nirmal K Agarwal and Abubakar Gula Hussain have duped him of Rs 4,08,053.

According to the complaint, the victim received a mail on his e-mail ID (dhani_6002@yahoo.co.in) informing him that he had won a ‘prize’ in an online lottery. He was told that his prize had been sent to him by the Post Service Courier and he should approach one Walter Floyd to collect it. When he contacted the said person, he was told to pay Rs 16,000 as ‘courier charges’. He immediately obliged by transfering the money to Rakesh Kumar Gupta’s account from an SBI account on October 25.

It was only the beginning of a large trap. When Akshay contacted his callers again, they told him that his consignment was held up at the airport for non-payment of the ‘necessary charges’. They asked him to pay Rs 92,053 for collecting it. An unsuspecting Akshay obliged them again and deposited the amount in the account of Nirmal K Agarwal through ICICI bank on October 28 and 29.

The third time, his callers came up with another ‘hurdle’. They made him believe that his prize had been sent through a firm called Sabadel Diplomatic Security and Finance to a person, who had been stuck at the Mumbai International Airport for non-payment of custom charges. They again asked him to pay Rs 3 lakh through Axis Bank to the account of another accused Abubakar Gula Hussain. The victim was again entrapped and made the payment on November 2.

But, Akshay ran out of patience when he was asked to further pay Rs 7.1 lakh since the UK Government had ‘stopped’ his consignment. His apprehensions knew no bound when he came to know that it was all fraud.

Inspector M Srinivas told Deccan Herald that they were investigating the case and hoped to make a breakthrough soon. The City police's cyber crime wing has been informed, he added.
